Using Your New Dentures

Getting used to your new dentures takes time. If you were to have an artificial leg you wouldn't expect to be able to run with it the first day. A denture is the same, it requires getting used to. Please don't be discouraged if you have some problems.

At the beginning a soft - not sticky - diet is recommended. Work up to harder foods and more difficult to chew foods, over time.

Try to chew on both sides at once rather than on just one side as this will help stop the dentures from tipping from side to side.

When biting into something with front teeth, use your tongue to hold the back of the upper denture and this will help maintain suction.

Cut food into small pieces and take small bites. It's easier to chew and you won't have to open wide and displace the lower denture.

The upper stays in with suction and the lower sits over the ridge but floats. It takes some practice to manage this, but have patience.

Speech may be affected but again, with practice, it soon becomes normal .
( Try talking to yourself when no one else is around.)
